Thoughts on the Newcastle Rapidplay Jamboree 13/7/10 by Peter Tideswell.
Fenton managed to scrape together a team to compete in the jamboree held at Newcastle chess club, albeit with the help of Dave Johnson from Kidsgrove. As it was a combined Fenton/Kidsgrove effort, our team was called “Fenton Kids” (average age probably well over forty). The other members of our happy band were Danny Griffiths, Karl Walklate and myself as stand in captain. Due to Danny’s grade we were forced to play in the Open Section – something I omitted to mention until everyone had agreed to play.
I had not captained a team for a few years and in the pub beforehand all the imagined problems that go with the job kept entering my head. Will everyone turn up on time? Will they switch their mobiles off? And most importantly will Karl remember NOT to wear his shorts.
Anyway to my relief everyone turned up and play commenced. In the first round, only a draw by me on board four saved us from complete disaster as the others succumbed to superior opposition. In my game, Alan Thomason with a better position, graciously agreed a draw after he was down on time, although he probably would have won, time permitting.
In round two it was back to reality as we all scored zero, although it looked as if Dave might pull off the shock of the night against Craig Whitfield. Craig was well down on time and it looked (through my BCF grade 87 eyes) as if Dave might win on time or at least force a draw. However, Craig did what he does best by getting a pawn to the eighth rank, promoting it to a Queen and checkmating Dave with about 10 seconds left on his clock. Hard luck Dave but a fine effort nonetheless.
Despite the result, it was an excellent evening and I must mention Martin Harris who, organised the tournament, and also to Dave from Kidsgrove for agreeing to turn out for us with very little notice.
P.S. If anyone is still wondering, Karl did turn up suitably attired.
