06/03/07.After a good draw the previous
Friday, Fenton D were unable to continue where they left off as
they succumbed to a stronger Cheddleton team at The New Penny
last night (Mon 5 March). Things got off to an encouraging start
after Robert earned the "man of the match award" with an
excellent draw against an opponent graded 39 points higher than
himself.
However, the team could not keep the momentum going as Mark and
Joe unfortunately lost on boards two and three. The only other
bright spot was newcomer Lee Jones scrapping for a well earned
draw on the bottom board in only his second game for the club.

and somehow managed to scrape a draw and with the help of Carl on
board 2 and Phil on board 4 the team came away with a valuable

semi final of the Jackson Cup, played at Stafford chess club
(neutral venue) against Boldmere St Michaels, wins on board 2 for
John and on board 3 for Steve left everyone watching the battle
going on board 1, last to finish - Michael Williams v Mike
Harrington ended up being a very close game with Mike Harrington
being low on time but at least 2 pawns ahead for a bishop in a
close endgame unfortunately Michael Williams couldn't stop the
advancing pawns.
