05/07/10. Two tied at halfway point!
Round 3 results for the Internal Club Championship, have been added, 3 players took a half point bye, the draw for round 3 will be added Thursday 8th.
28/06/10. Three Drop Outs!
Round 2 results for the Internal Club Championship, have been added, 1 player took a half point bye and 3 players have withdrawn from the competition, the draw for round 3 will be added asap.
21/06/10. Members Kick Off!
The 2010 Internal Club Championship, kicked off tonight, 2 players took half point bye's in round 1, the draw for round 2 will be added asap.
15/06/07. The Special One Takes Top Job!
The club held its AGM. last night. Click the link for full details, the main changes were as follows-

(1) Steve Emmerton elected as the clubs new Secretary.
(2) It was also decided that the club should have an official Chairman, Steve Emmerton was elected to fill the new post.
(3) Club fees have been increased for next season from £15 to £18 (Employed) and from £10 to £12 (Unemployed,students and retired).
(4) The outgoing Club Secretary Mark Whitby was unable to attend, 2010 report. added to the website.

21/05/10. The long play season ended for Fenton tonight, the last fixture was a top of the table clash between champions Fenton D and second placed Cheddleton H and ended with a draw thanks to Wins by Steve Emmerton and Philip Grocott.
Final score- Cheddleton H 2-2 Fenton D.
17/05/10. Division 4 Champions Fenton C were Hammered in their last game of the season, the highlight being Rob Taylor's win on board 1, many have asked if Steve is still the "Special One" after tonight's defeat! Read Captain Fantastic's blog for more details!

10/05/10. Fenton A finished the season with an excellent win tonight, Danny and John won on boards 2 and 3, boards 1, 4 and 5 finished drawn. The D team were also in action and thanks to a win for Karl on board 2 and draws on 1, 3 and 4 the team secured division 5. Well done to all involved!

08/05/10. The C team picked up two more points last night, wins by Ernest Wilkinson and Stuart Hull plus draws by Robert Taylor and Karl Walklate secured the victory.

23/04/10. The A team minus several key players collected two more points last night, Tony held his much higher rated opponent to a draw on board 1 followed by Stuart also drawing on 5 then both Danny and Steve had excellent wins on 2 and 4.

19/04/10. Fenton lost in the final of the Perry Trophy tonight, draws for Neal and Steve on boards 2 and 3 kept the score respectable.

16/04/10. Fenton reached the final of the Perry Trophy tonight with the help of wins by Carl Mustafa and Peter Tideswell plus draws for Captain Fantastic Emmerton and Derek Whitehurst, we now face Newcastle in the final. Read Captain Fantastic's blog!

13/04/10. A New venue and Captain (Steve Emmerton) inspired the A team to record their best win of the season last night, wins for Jarosław Andy and Abdulbari plus draws for John and Rob Taylor lifted the A team off the foot of the table.
Fenton D took a share of the points in their match against hosts Meir C thanks to wins by both Mark and Geoff, Fenton D only need 2 points from our remaining 2 matches to wrap up the title. Read Captain Fantastic's blog on last night's events!

30/03/10. Division 4 Champions Fenton C stretched their lead last night thanks to wins by Karl Walklate and Steve Emmerton plus draws for Stuart Hull and Derek Whitehurst.

29/03/10. Fenton A were outclassed by a much stronger Cheddleton B tonight, John prevented the whitewash with a draw on board 2.

27/03/10. The Champions are Champions as Fenton C emulate last years title win by winning Division 4 outright again, Newcastle D had threatened to take a share of the top spot but faltered against Cheddleton E last night, well done to all team members!
22/03/10. Fenton were involved in two very close matches tonight, the first was the Semi-final of the U161 Gothard Cup against Warley Quinborne, we gave a good account of ourselves considering the difference in grades but finished on the wrong side of victory, the highlight being the win by Andy Stott on board 3.
The other match ended with a win for Fenton C and secured 2 more points giving us a clear lead in division 4, Neal Davies and John White enjoyed wins against stronger players and Abdulbari had an excellent draw on board 1 Final scores-

An impressive draw on board 1 for Tony Holdford and a draw on board 3 for John Amison for Fenton A. The other fixture started with an advantage for Fenton C due to Newcastle D defaulting board 4 however Fenton were lucky to come away with a share of the points after both Richard and Steve finished their games with a draw. 03/03/10. Fenton's invasion of Newcastle chess club reaps little reward!
Andy Stott prevented a whitewash with an excellent victory on board 2 for Fenton A against a very Strong Newcastle C, and Fenton D manage to take a point thanks to a win on board 4 by Derek Whitehurst and draws for both Carl Mustafa and Joe Orsolics. Final score-

15/02/10. Fenton played host to both Macclesfield and Cheddleton G tonight, The A team gave a good account of themselves with 3 draws against a much stronger Macclesfield and Fenton D suffered their first defeat of the season against a resilient Cheddleton G.

11/02/10. Fenton C were involved in another close battle last tonight, the win by Karl on board 2 secured victory for the team.

09/02/10. The A team ended a losing run stretching back to early December 2008 last night, with individual wins for Robert Taylor and Mark Whitby plus draws for Tony and Karl.

01/02/10. Fenton ended on the wrong side of victory tonight in the Semi-Final of the Major Trophy, (U150 5 boards) in what was a closely fought match with draws on the top 4 boards and board 5 looking like it could go either way, a nailbiting finish sadly ended in defeat for Fenton. Fenton played host to both Alsager and Kidsgrove last night, Fenton A continued their campaign in division 2 with another defeat this time against a much stronger Alsager A, Fenton C unbeaten in division 4 beat Kidsgrove B to go 4 points clear of their nearest rival. 15/01/10. Fenton progressed to the Semi Finals of the Perry Trophy (U110 4 boards) last night with a 3-1 victory against Hassell thanks to wins by Steve, Geoff and Peter. Final score- Hassell 1-3 Fenton.

Fenton A ended 2009 with a draw tonight, with the top 3 boards ending drawn and Mark losing on board 4 it was down to Steve to turn a small advantage into a win, after wearing out the soles of his shoes due to his constant walking between moves he finally secured the point. final score- HC Knights 2½-2½ Fenton A.

Fenton B had their first win of the new season tonight against a slightly stronger Cheddleton C, We had a little help though from the laws of chess due to a mobile phone ringing, the rule reads "10.7. It is strictly forbidden to bring a mobile phone, not authorized by the chief arbiter, into the playing hall. If a players mobile phone rings in the playing venue during play, that player shall lose the game according the Laws of Chess" yours truly felt guilty about Profiting from the rule, maybe they should change the rule to read "Your opponent can claim the win if he wishes" im sure the vast majority of games especially at club level would continue. 21/09/09. The South Potteries Chess Challenge Cup was played tonight, we had never won this pre-season friendly played against our closest neighbours Meir Chess club but thanks to wins for John, Karl, Mark, Neil and Richard plus a draw for Robert Taylor we finally managed to bring the cup home to the New Penny, we are now thinking of touring the city in an open top bus.

30/08/09. The 2009 final grades have been released and added to the Members page these will be used throughout the season for eligibility purposes in ECF Standardplay competitions.
26/08/09. Fenton's 2009/10 Fixtures for the coming season have been added to the site.
25/08/09. The 2009 rapidplay Swiss tournament was completed last night, Jarosław Gorski finished in 1st place on 6 points, Danny Griffiths 2nd with 4½ points and Tony Holdford 3rd with 4 points.
11/08/09. The 2009 provisional grades have been added to the Members page the final grades should be released at the end of the month.
11/08/09. 18 players took part in rounds 3 and 4 of the rapidplay Swiss tournament last night with Jarosław Gorski unbeaten on 4 points and Danny, Tony and Robert Taylor close behind on 3 points with only 2 rounds remaining.

19/05/09. Both of Fenton's Rapid play teams were in action last night, The open team "Fenton White Knights" were put in their place by a far stronger Holmes Chapel side, Karl walklate playing on board 3 stopped a complete two match whitewash with an excellent win against a far stronger player. -

Fenton's Suicidal Pawns outgrading their opponents on all but top board went into their match as slight favourites however Newcastle put up a decent fight and managed to gain a draw in the second match. -

08/05/09. The long play season ended for Fenton last night with a disappointing defeat for Fenton B against title leaders Cheddleton F who on the back of this win have won division 3. Well done to all involved!

03/05/09. Fenton's rapidplay team "White Knights" have moved up a division into the open section, i have updated the fixture list and club calendar plus added the open division table to the Rapidplay page.
30/04/09. Fenton complete the double (Division 4 winners) by winning the final of the U101 Withnall Cup tonight, im told the night was tense for most of the players involved as the result was very close, board 1 winner Steve Emmerton has added an excellent report on his blog, Stuart Hull and Peter Tideswell also scored excellent victories to seal the match, Congratulation to all those that took part in this competition which we last won 2 years ago without playing in the final due to our opponents withdrawing. We would also like to thank Stafford Chess Club for the use of their venue.

25/04/09. Fenton C were confirmed as champions of Division 4 last night thanks to Kidsgrove beating title challengers Cheddleton H, well done to all team members!
24/04/09. The Final of the U90 Cup took place tonight, Richard Cantliffe and Robert West won on boards 3 and 4, however the top 2 boards were won by our hosts ending a close match with a draw but due to the board count rule Hassell win.

20/04/09. Fenton A ended their season with a draw against Meir A, a single win on board 2 for Jarosław, and draws for John, Robert and Steve secured the draw.

06/04/09. A single draw prevented a whitewash tonight, huge thanks to Stuart for standing as team Captain and setting up the equipment.

30/03/09. Fenton B gained revenge for their earlier defeat tonight, thanks to wins for Jarosław, Steve and Richard plus a draw for Geoff.

Fenton progress into the final of the Withnall Cup after beating Walsall Kipping, huge thanks to our opponents for agreeing to play at a neutral venue reducing travelling time and also thanks to Stafford chess Club for the use of their venue and equipment. Wins for Karl Walklate and Geoff Yates plus draws for Steve Emmerton and Richard Cantliffe secured the victory.

02/03/09. 2009 continues to be a bad year for Fenton A with another loss to add to our results, yours truly turned a winning advantage into a lost game in the space of a few minutes, Tony, Abdulbari and Steve ended their games with a draw. Final score- Fenton A 1½-3½ Newcastle B.
23/02/09. The excellent Blog known as the Rambling Rook, run by Newcastle's Martyn Harris has inspired our Club Secretary Mark Whitby to start a blog which he has named- The rantings of a Suicidal Pawn. (links open in new window and can be found in future in the links section)
23/02/09. A night of mixed results with both teams emulating their current form, The A team continued their losing run with the top three boards ending on the wrong side of victory, (we were dreaming of pancakes) Abdulbari had a good win on board 4 and Robert Taylor agreed a draw on board 5. Final score- Fenton A 1½-3½ HC Rooks.
Different fortunes for the C team though, they managed another win taking them joint top of division 4, Wins for Richard Cantliffe and Robert West plus a draw for Steve Emmerton secured the points. Final score- Fenton C 2½-1½ Meir B.
18/02/09. Fenton's U90 Cup team reached the final tonight with the help of our opponents Newcastle who defaulted board 4, Richard added to the score with a win on board 3 and Mark secured the victory with a draw on board 1, the other Semi final Hassell v Holmes Chapel will be played on Friday.
Final score- Newcastle 1½-2½ Fenton.
13/02/09. Fenton C beat current leaders Cheddleton H tonight, they are now only 2 points behind with a game in hand, Wins for Rob Taylor and Karl Walklate plus a draw for Geoff secured victory. Final score- Cheddleton H 1½-2½ Fenton C.

Club member Richard Cantliff managed to claim a share of the prize money for finishing second in the U90 section, Abdulbari Kabiri was the clubs best finisher in the U120 section and Jarosław Gorski the only Fenton player in the top section put up a good performance with 2 wins and a draw, visit the link for more details and photo's of the event.
09/02/09. Fenton get that Deja Vu feeling as Holmes Chapel knock us out of another Cup Competition, this time it was the Semi final of the U110 Cup, they didn't have it all their own way though, Danny had an excellent win on board 1 and both Karl Walklate on board 3 and Richard Cantliffe on board 5 ended their games with a draw. Final score- Fenton 2-3 Holmes Chapel.

04/02/09. A weakened A team were no match for HC Knights tonight, draws for Jarosław Gorski, John and an excellent draw for Stuart help to keep the final score respectable. Final score- HC Knights 3½-1½ Fenton A. They say things come in threes, they have for the A team having lost our last three games.

30/01/09. Fenton ended their recent losing run tonight by knocking Hassell out of the Withnall Cup, wins for Steve Emmerton, Geoff Yates and Phil Grocott plus a draw for Carl Mustafa secured a place in the Semi Final. Final score- Fenton 3½-1½ Hassell.
21/01/09. Fenton B gained revenge for their earlier defeat tonight, thanks to an impressive win for Jarosław Gorski on board 1 plus wins for Robert Taylor and Richard Tunstall. Final score- Stafford B 1-3 Fenton B.

20/01/09. The B team were back to winning ways last night thanks to wins on the top 3 boards for Jarosław Gorski, Abdulbari and Steve. Final score- Fenton B 3-1 H Chapel Pawns.
13/01/09. Fenton were knocked out of the U135 Cup tonight, the game ended drawn on board count but Holmes Chapel win on elimination, Stuart Hulls win on board 5 against George Scattergood being eliminated sending Holmes Chapel into the final against Newcastle. Final score- Holmes Chapel 2½-2½ Fenton.
12/01/09. Fenton C earned two more points tonight thanks to excellent wins for Jarosław Gorski Robert West and Joe Orsolics plus a draw on board 2 for Geoff Yates. Final score- Fenton C 3½-½ Alsager B.
10/01/09. Fenton will play Hassell in the Quarter finals of the . Withnall Cup. on 30/01/09 at Newcastle Bridge Club.
10/01/09. The B team were unable to add to Jarosław Gorski excellent win on board 1, Robert Taylor ended a close game with a draw and Stuart Hull ran out of time plus for reason's not known one of our players failed to show up. Final score- Cheddleton E 2½-1½ Fenton B.
05/01/09. The A team started the New Year with a narrow defeat tonight, the bottom 4 boards all ended with draws although there was a bit of drama on board 3 when Macclesfield's Philip Cattermole in time trouble accidentally knocked the board over sending the pieces flying through the air, after some debate both players agreed on a draw. Final score- Fenton A 2-3 Macclesfield.

15/12/08. Twas ten nights before Christmas when all through the pub everyone pushed pawns in the hope of a win, Oops i blame all the Christmas adverts anyway im sure your only here for tonights result, Mark playing on board 1 continued in good form with another win, sadly boards 2 and 3 both lost but Joe playing on board 4 had an excellent win earning the team a share of the points. final score-

24/11/08. Fenton move into the semi final of the U110 Cup without even pushing a pawn, first round opponents Meir failed to turn up having forgotten they had entered the competition. final score- Fenton 5-d Meir.

The A team capped off a good week for the club with an excellent draw against a slightly stronger Newcastle B team, Robert Taylor on board 5 was the only player to taste victory for Fenton, draws for John Amison, Tony Holdford and Andy Stott secured the draw, final score- Newcastle B 2½-2½ Fenton A.
17/11/08. They say things come in three's, and they did tonight for both the B and C teams playing at the same venue on the same night and finishing with the same score's, Fenton B earned victory with the help of a default on board 3 and wins on boards 2 and 4 for Robert Taylor and Steve Emmerton plus a draw on board 1 by John Amison, final score- Fenton B 3½-½ Cheddleton E.
Fenton C emulated the B team thanks to wins by Karl Walklate (debut) playing on board 1, Geoff Yates on 3 and Robert West on 4 plus a draw on 2 for Carl Mustafa. final score- Fenton C 3½-½ Cheddleton G.
14/11/08. Tonight Fenton beat Cheddleton in round 1 of the U90 cup, the 2007 winners put up a good fight though, a win for team Captain Mark Whitby on board 1 and draws for Stuart Hull and Geoff Yates left the score level at 2-2 but thanks to the board count rule Fenton go through to the next round. , final score-
