"Fenton bowled over in Withnall"
Things started off badly when neither of the four occupants travelling
to the match in Carl's car could remember when or where people were
meeting to be picked up. It was more confusing than playing the Kings
Indian defence I can tell you, but we eventually set off at 6.20pm some
thirty minutes after we were supposed to. Our destination ? Boldmere St
Michaels,in Sutton Coldfield for our Withnall Trophy semi final match.
I
am fairly sure this is the furthest the club has had to travel for an
away match, I suggested if we play them again an overnight stop would
be
in order.
We arrived in good time to meet up with Robert Taylor who was already
happily ensconced in the bar. The match unfortunately did not go as
smoothly as the journey down the M6 as only Robert and "Curtains" Carl
could manage draws and "Rowdy" Yates, Stuart and myself all slumped to
defeat. The journey back up the motor way was enlivened only by the
supply of Apple and Blackcurrent flavoured sweets I had brought, and, to
round
off a perfect evening,we eventually arrived back at the New Penny just
after closing time.
Congratulations to Boldmere, who were excellent hosts, and we wish them
well in the final. Match report by Peter Tideswell. Final score-

20/12/07.Club Secretary Mark Whitby was stand
in Captain for Stuart last night in the first round of the Withnall cup and has
published the following story on the
In the Staffs County Withnall Cup, Fenton progressed into the semi-final with a 4½ - ½ win over Lichfield in a match played at Stafford Chess Club. It started off badly for Fenton. Vice-Captain Mark Whitby, standing in for Stuart Hull who was a last minute call up to the league's A team, lost the toss and so Lichfield captain Richard Smith chose white on 1. However, Geoff Yates started off the results well for the "home" side with a hard fought draw on board 1 against David Short. The results then got better for Fenton when Robert West went a Queen up on board 4 and with some good end game play was able to mate his opponent. Richard Tunstall then forced an excellent win on board 2 in his first game for over a year. This meant that Fenton had won the match no matter what as even two defeats on the remaining boards would have meant Fenton won on board count. This was not needed though as Robert Taylor won on board 3 for Fenton. It was finished off by Mark on board 5 when he overcame a sticky start (despite being a pawn up) to go 3 pawns up and eventually force his opponent to resign. The result means that the holders of the Withnall Cup progress to the semi finals, and captain Stuart will be hoping to lift the trophy again.
