2009 Club Simul.
2009 simultaneous chess exhibition. 2009 simultaneous chess exhibition.
On Monday, 3 August Fenton held it's second Simultaneous Chess Exhibition. After staging a similar event last year with Alex Richardson, this time it was the turn of Simon Hood (ECF grade 180) from Alsager Chess Club who was invited to pit his wits against Fenton's finest.
The above mentioned finest consisted of: John, Stuart, Karl, Robert (Taylor), Joe, Ernest, Richard, Neil and Peter and with grades ranging between ECF 125 and 63, we knew we would be in for a hard contest. Despite everyone's efforts, the final score ended 8.5 - 0.5 in favour of Simon, with Neil Davies the only one upholding the club's honour with a creditable draw.
To make the night even more interesting, Alex Richardson (ECF 178) came along and after the main event staged an impromptu "mini-simul" against John, Karl and Peter with the score a predictable 3-0 to Alex. All in all a most enjoyable evening and we all found it quite an experience playing against such highly rated opponents.
Finally, many thanks to Simon Hood for coming along and bravely putting his reputation on the line. His performance all the more impressive when he mentioned that this was the first time he had taken part in a simul !
